NR-1 AND PSYCHOSOCIAL RISKS IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

> What is it about?

Regulatory Standard No. 1 (NR-1) governing Occupational Risk Management, iand ssued by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor and Employment, was amended in August 2024 to include so-called “work-related psychosocial risk factors,” i.e., risks to workers’ mental health. As a result, such risks are now treated on an equal footing with physical, chemical, and biological risks in terms of those that must be managed when present in the workplace.

> To whom it applies? Is it mandatory?

NR-1 revised must continue to be observed by both employers and employees. Companies are responsible for reviewing their risk management documentation, such as the PGR (Risk Management Program) and the PCMSO (Occupational Health Medical Control Program), among other applicable instruments.

> What to do?

A technical assessment must be conducted by a company specialized in occupational health and safety to evaluate whether psychosocial risks exist and to provide guidance on the necessary compliance measures. It is also advisable that risk management documentation be reviewed from a legal perspective.
